BIOGRAPHY

I am the oldest of five children and was raised in the Midwest—Michigan to be exact.  My family and I moved to North Carolina when I was sixteen where I attended and graduated from Bishop McGuinness High School. I went on to Appalachian State University to receive a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. I have been married for six years to my husband, Theron.

I am beginning my eleventh year teaching at St. Leo School.  This will be my twelfth teaching in the Diocese of Charlotte.  My first teaching job was third grade at Our Lady of Grace.  I went on to substitute teach in the public school system which led me to a part time reading teacher position at Ibraham Elementary. During this time I became an Academic Language Therapist teaching reading, writing, and spelling skills to dyslexic students using the Orton-Gillingham method while being mentored by Dr. Lucia Karnes, a well-known psychologist in the field of dyslexia.  This brought me to teach at Jefferson Day School where I continued using my Orton-Gillingham training to work in an alternative academic setting for three years.  Now, at St. Leo, I continue to use these teaching skills and have become certified in the Mel Levine program called Schools Attuned which addresses the different learning needs of all students.  I am also a member of the North Carolina Science Teachers Association.
