BOOK REVIEWS – HISTORICAL FICTION

Title: The $66 Summer

*********************************************************

Author:  John Armistead

Genre:  Historical Fiction

Rating:  8

Critique:  I have one reason why I gave the $66 Summer a rating of 8.  For the most part, this is an excellent book with lots of adventure and excitement.  The book was thrilling and hard to put down once I started reading it.  The main reason I gave this book an 8 is because of how it ended; they never solved the mystery of who murdered Staple Garrison.  Overall, it was a great story with a not-so-great ending.

Title: Around the World in 80 Days

Author:  Jules Verne

Genre:  Historical Fiction

Rating:  7

Critique:  I gave this book a 7 because it was interesting, but it had some hard names, like Phineas Fogg, Passepartout, and Aouda.  Still, I liked the book.  From reading the book, I learned about the most commonly used transportation in the 1860’s – 1870’s.  I couldn’t really understand parts of it, though.

Critique:  I would give this book an 8/10 because I felt it was a good book to read for my book report, but the story moved along slowly.  The book itself was exciting but needs a little more suspense.  Overall, it is a good book which I recommend to everyone.  It also had a lot of historical fact.

Author:  Naylor, Phyllis Reynolds

Genre:  Historical Fiction

Rating:  9

Critique:  Blizzard’s Wake tells about a true time in history with made-up characters.  It is so exciting that you sometimes get butterflies.  It is especially exciting to read about the conflict between the characters.  Once I hadn’t realized it but I stayed up until midnight reading it.  Even if you’ve read it before, it’s a good book for someone to read if they are feeling down.

Title:  The Bomb

**********************************************************

Author:  Taylor, Theodore

Genre:  Historical Fiction

Rating:  8.5

Critique:  There were many reasons I like this book.  One of these reasons is because there was a lot of action in the book.  I also like how Sorry, who was the main character, took on a leadership role among his people.  The last reason I liked this book was because there were a lot of emotions and there wasn’t the usual expected happy ending.  This book was not hard to understand so I would recommend it for anyone from ten years old and older.  I would also specifically recommend this book to people who enjoy reading books about historical events.

Title:  A Boy at War

*********************************************************

Author:  Harry Mazer

Genre:  Historical Fiction

Rating: 10

Critique:  I would give this book a 10 rating.  I thought the book was great because I really enjoy learning more about the war.  The book was fun to read, because it gave very interesting facts about the war.  My favorite part was when the family dropped leis into the sea.  It sounded like it was very beautiful but yet very sad because the families were saying good-bye to their dead husbands or fathers.  The book did have some sad parts, but overall I thought it was great.  I would recommend that you read this book if you enjoy reading about World War II like I do.

Author:  Ian Serailler

Critique: I thought this was a great book.  It was suspenseful and sometimes thrilling.  The way the author described the most important moments with such detail made it extra-enjoyable to read.  The suspense of the nazi soldiers bombing the city of Warsaw, and 4 children left on their own to survive was a great plot.  For this book, also, the mood was always right on.  It was never too cheesy or too ever-explained.

Title:  I am David

Author:  Ann Holm

Critique: Some of the reasons that this book is great are that the author uses so many descriptions and details in this book.  The author also goes in depth about David’s journey and how it was to live in a concentration camp for 12 years and how cruel the guards treated the prisoners.  Another reason is when David finally escapes, the author expresses his desire to go to Denmark and find his mother and live.

It is about a 12 or 13-year-old girl who is  a freed slave.  She is a teacher to all of the slave children and teaches them to read and write.  I thought the book was a little bit boring and it did not have enough action.  I liked the characters and the setting.  You will learn a lot about the slaves what their life was like.

Critique: The reasons I gave this book a 7 out of 10 are because it had a lot of action, but sometimes the story trailed off to another time and place.  Also, there were too many main characters in the story.  Sometimes it was hard to tell who was who.  Overall, it was a so-so book and had a lot of adjectives.  I don’t exactly highly recommend it, but I recommend it.

Title:  Johnny Tremain

*********************************************************

Author:  Esther Forbes

Genre:  Historical Fiction

Rating: 9

Critique: This book happened to compare to exactly what we were learning in history at the time.  This was the Revolutionary War with the colonists and the British.  I could really relate well in both the novel, and the history chapters in class.  That made the book really fun to read.  Also, it is impossible to predict the events in this book.  For example, when Johnny burns his hand and cripples it, when he is searching for a new trade, and several other times.  This book is very interesting in terms of the history (Boston Tea Party, Revolutionary War, Boston Massacre).  It won the Newbery Award, and it most definitely deserved it.  If you like early colonial times in America, with Paul Revere and Sam Adams, I advise you to experience the greatness of the novel Johnny Tremain.

Title:  The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins

*********************************************************

Author: Walter Dean Myers

Genre:  Historical Fiction

Rating: 10

Critique: It is one of the most interesting historical fiction books I have ever read.  The book is so historically correct, and it is not dull!  Most of the historical fiction books I have read are so dull and long that they take me an hour just to read twenty pages.  This book is very action-packed, and it gives every detail about what really happened on D-Day.  The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins  is about a young U.S. infantryman who is sent to aid in the invasion of Normandy.  Scott and his friends march into France to destroy Hitler and the Nazis.  On his way, he has to fight planes, machine guns, half-tracks, Panzer tanks, grenades, snipers, and the Nazi army.  This book is really one of the best, historically accurate historical fiction books I have ever read.

Genre:  Historical Fiction

Rating: 9

Critique:  I really enjoyed this book.  It was a great story about the potato famine Ireland.  Nory, the girl in the story, was very brave and courageous when her family runs low on food.  Most of her family has already set off to America before she finally gets a ticket to go.  It’s a really neat story, but some of the parts were sad.

Critique: It is a book abouth the Revolutionary War.  A rifle-maker’s boy goes to war with a friend but returns home and he and his father both go back and join the American Militia.  Very detailed battles.  If you like the Revolutionary War or the Over the Mountain Men, you should read this book.  Vivid descriptions of battles, and the author used the main character to tell about how life was back then.

Critique: This was an excellent book!  Although there were some parts where it got boring, or felt like there were WAY too many descriptive words in that passage, the book was overall an excellent read.  The girl is from Ireland, so some of the things she says are kind of hard to understand at first.  I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in books about historic events, and adventure.

Critique:  I gave this book a “6” because of two reasons:  one positive, one negative.  The negative reason is because even though it is of the historical fiction genre, it doesn’t give as much information as you might expect.  The positive reason is that the story line was good and the characters’ personalities differed.

Critique: It was, in general, a good source of information.  This book did contain some bias and untruths, and because it is mainly Victoria’s diary entries, it only showed her part of the story of her life.  There were many questions I had unanswered when I finished reading this book.  Therefore, I had to do research.  Although this book did keep me searching, it also was very informational.  It contained interesting information about Victoria’s childhood and the people contained in it.  I used this book for my historical bias report.
