BOOK REVIEWS - MYSTERY
Title: And Then There Were None ********************************************************* Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery Rating: 9 Critique: I am giving this book a nine because it is so action-packed. Also this book is a great mystery. It is almost impossible to figure out who is killing the people on the island. The only reason this book is not a 10 is because some of its parts are difficult to understand. Library Location: Mario Grade 7
Title: After the Funeral ********************************************************* Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery Rating: 9 Critique: It was a very good book, but a little confusing. I like it because there were a lot of plot twists. Library Location: Other Grade 7
Title: Assassin ********************************************************* Author: Patricia Finney Genre: Mystery Rating: 10 Critique: I thought that this book was wonderful! I would recommend this book to girls in the 7th grade or older (because it is a bit confusing), who love mystery, friendship, and adventure. I say this is a tale of “daggers, death, and a very daring girl,” Lady Grace Cavendish, a maid of honor to the Queen. She has to marry one of three suitors. She chooses Lord Robert, but in the night, another suitor dies and Lord Robert is blamed for it. Lady Grace has to find the real murderer and save Lord Robert before it’s too late. I am looking forward to reading the sequel. Library Location: Anna Grade 7 Title: Before I Say Good-Bye ********************************************************** Author: Mary Higgins Clark Genre: Mystery Rating: 10 Critique: I would give this book a 10 because it was an excellent mystery. I really enjoyed it because there is a twist in the end, which makes the ending very surprising! Another reason why I gave this book a 10 was because the ending turns out part unhappy, and part happy. This is why I really liked it. Library Location: Borders Jennifer Grade 8
Title: A Body in the Library ********************************************************* Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery Rating: 7 Critique: It was a very suspenseful mystery, and kept me wanting to read it. Library Location: Other Anna Grade 7
Title: Bomb in the Besseldorf Bus Depot ********************************************************* Author: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor Genre: Mystery Rating: 9 Critique: It was very interesting to read. Title: The Callender Papers ********************************************************* Author: Cynthia Voigt Genre: Mystery Rating: 8 Critique: A very good mystery. Had a little historical fiction in it. It also had a life or death situation in the end of the book. Library Location: Other Casey Grade 7
Title: Cards on the Table ********************************************************* Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery Rating: 9 Critique: It is a great interesting book that is hard to put down. It’s a very mysterious scary book. You don’t know who committed the murders until you figure it out in the end. You think you know who it is until that person is dead. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK RIGHT BEFORE YOU GO TO BED AT NIGHT!! Library Location: Avery Grade 7 Title: The Cat Who Knew a Cardinal ********************************************************* Author: Lilian Jackson Braun Genre: Mystery Rating: 9 Critique: I think that this book was very good because it is exciting and suspenseful. Like all in the series, the book has two cats, and one that has a unique “sixth sense”. This book is about a murder and when you read the book you can start to collect the clues. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery and an intense book. Library Location: Border’s Alyssa Grade 6
Title: Cold Edge ********************************************************* Author: Robert W. Walker Genre: Mystery Rating: 8 Critique: It was really good but it was a little too gory. It was about a murderer on the loose. I would recommend this book but only to people who like gory murder mysteries. Library Location: Other Sara Grade 7
Title: Curtain ********************************************************* Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery Rating: 7 Critique: I enjoyed Curtain, because it is a murder
mystery, and it is not easy to tell who the murderer is. It keeps the reader guessing throughout the
book. However, it is sad, too. Hercule Poirot dies before the end of the book. He is old and not in the best of
health. There are five different
murders presented, and the murderers are believed to be found. Poirot feels
though the “X” is involved in all of them.
All of these twists make the book hard to follow. Poirot himself
shoots “X” so that he will not provoke anyone else to commit murder. Then Poirot does
not take his medicine so that his own death will come sooner. Library Location: Caitlin Grade 7 Title: Dead Man’s Folly ********************************************************* Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery Rating: 10 Critique: This book is one of the best books I have ever read! It is about a detective name Hercule Poirot who is asked to come to a fete because his friend, Ariadne Oliver, thinks something horrible is going to happen. And something horrible does, in fact, happen. Several people are murdered! Of course, in the end everything is solved by Hercule Poirot. I gave this book a ten because it really is addictive and makes you want to read more and more of it, and not just put it down. Aslo, in the end, you will never guess what happens. I could recommend this book to children who are in 7th grade or older. Library Location: Grace Grade 7 Title: Dead Man’s Riddle ********************************************************* Author: Arthur Hitchcock Genre: Mystery Rating: 10 Critique: I think this book was great! Title: Death on the ********************************************************* Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery Rating: 8 Critique: This book was very well written and very suspenseful. Library Location: Other (also available at St. Leo Main Library) Steffie Grade 7
Title: Dumb Witness ********************************************************* Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery Rating: 8.5 Critique: This book starts out really well. It is interesting and exciting, but towards the middle it starts getting boring. It is not very exciting, and there is a lot of conversation. It starts getting exciting again very soon, though. I kept changing my ideas of who the murderer was as I got more information. I would suggest this book to anyone who is searching for a great mystery. Agatha Christie is a wonderful author. Library Location: Hannah Grade 7 Title: Evil Under the Sun ********************************************************* Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery Rating: 10 Critique: It was very suspenseful and had everything a good mystery book needs: suspense, murder, and a surprise ending. You will go along with the story thinking it is the person, but every turn of the page will bring a chilling twist to the tale. Agatha Christie finds a way to stump the reader, as always. Library Location: Other Alison Grade 7

Library Location: Borders Alexa Grade 7 Title: The Five People You Meet in Heaven ********************************************************* Author: Mitch Albom Genre: Mystery Rating: 10 Critique: I am giving this book a ten rating because there was so much meaning to this book that people can relate to it in everyday life. I truly loved this book because everything fit together like a puzzle. There were parts that were scary, confusing, sad, and sometimes happy, but it all led up to a wonderful story. I would recommend this book to people who struggle through life, and people who think their lives are a total waste. I would also recommend this book to middle schoolers through adult ages. Title: The Hound of the Baskervilles ********************************************************* Author: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Genre: Mystery Rating: 9 Critique: This was a great book and mystery. I loved every aspect about the book except one: it was very hard to read. Since it was written in the 1800s, some of the words are spelled differently than they are today. Besides the trouble reading it, the book was great. You want to try and figure out who or what killed the Baskervilles, and it is surprising to find out who did it. Overall, it was a great book that I would recommend to people 12 and over. I loved this book because it was suspenseful, and kept me thinking about what would happen next. Library Location: Clemons Public Library Jane Ashley Grade 7 Title: Last Shot ********************************************************* Author: John Feinstein Genre: Mystery Rating: 7 Critique: I really liked this book because it was all about march madness and basketball. It was about 2 kids who win a writing contest and get to go to the ACC Tournament and be reporters. They are looking around in the locker rooms and they see that the star of the team, Chip Gaber, is being told by some man that he has to lose the championship game or his dad (who is also his coach) will lose his job. The kids and Gaber are off to figure out how to stop this from happening. Will they find the man behind all of this? Or will Chip have to throw away the NCAA championship title? This book was sometimes hard to understand because it assumed you knew the name of every announcer and reporter that has ever even been at the ACC tournament. Other than that, it was a great book. But if you don’t know sports, you’ll never be able to understand it. Library Location: Borders Sarah Grade 7 Title: Mandie and the ********************************************************** Author: Lois Leppard Genre: Mystery Rating: 7 Critique: I lied the book because I could understand it and the clues fit together well. It always keeps you in suspense of who murdered Roger Ackroyd. It also has a good and shocking ending. It was about a city of people who had survived a great was, and were confronted by a large group of refugees that had come from the secret underground city. It follows how they argued, and fought over the differences, but united to face a common problem. I thought the storyline was great, and very detailed. But it sometimes sounded like a lecture about views of things. Title: Seven Dials Mystery ********************************************************* Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery Rating: 7 Critique: This is a mystery story about a club, the Seven Dials. For a while many believe this is a killing club, but when Miss Bundle gets involved, more and more suspicion occurs. What is the Seven Dials Club? Who committed the murders? I rated the book a 7 because I found it hard to keep up with all of the characters and their personalities. Title: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ********************************************************* Author: Robert Louis Stevenson Genre: Mystery/Science Fiction Rating: 7 Critique: I rate this book a seven out of ten because it is one big mystery story inside a very well-written science-fiction novel. I did not give it a 10 because, in my opinion, the ending just totally dropped with the death of Dr. Jekyll and his alter-ego Mr. Hyde. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good science fiction or mystery book. I also found it interesting how he could be so nice and civilized and then suddenly change into a madman and a killer. Those are the reasons why I gave it a seven. Library Location: Brian Grade 8
