SLS SCRIP PROGRAM INFORMATION

St. Leo School families are asked to participate in the Scrip Family Rewards Program which benefits both our families and school.  Scrip is a program whereby families purchase gift cards from a list of participating retailers.  This list includes a variety of grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, and department stores.   Families purchase the gift cards at face value and spend them at the stores the same as cash.  There is no additional cost to the families.  The school purchases the gift cards from the retailers at a discount.  For example, Lowe’s Foods give a 10% discount so a $100 gift card costs the school only $90.

We ask that each family purchase a minimum of $2,000 for each Scrip fiscal year (May 15th-May 14th) to qualify for the Family Rewards Program.  This breaks down to approximately $170 per month in Scrip purchases.  However, there is no limit to the amount a family may purchase.  The first $2,000 is credited to the school’s account, and any purchases over $2,000 are credited to the family’s account.  At the end of the Scrip fiscal year, the average of all of the discounts given is calculated to determine the average profit percentage.  This is then applied to each account to determine the rewards money earned.  Family rewards money is applied first to a family’s Resource Fees with any remaining amount applied to their first month’s tuition.  For example, the Jones family purchased a total of $5,000 - $2,000 is credited to the school and $3,000 is credited to their family’s account.  Therefore, if the average profit percentage is 5%, the Jones family earned $150 to be applied to their next year’s Resource Fees.

The Scrip Family Rewards Program is an excellent way to raise funds for both our school and assist families with their Resource Fees.  It requires no extra cost and families are able to patronize the merchants they normally use. If a family chooses not to participate in the Scrip Family Rewards Program, they are assessed a $250 fee.  If a family does not purchase the minimum $2,000, they are assessed a partial fee based on the amount below the $2,000 minimum.

Frequently asked questions:

What is Scrip?  Scrip is “substitute money” (gift cards) that is used just like cash at participating retailers.  St. Leo purchases the gift cards from local merchants and Great Lakes Scrip Center.  St. Leo resells the gift cards at face value and generates revenue by retaining the given discounts.  The percentage that St. Leo earns from each merchant varies and is listed next to each retailer on the order forms.  For example, Lowe’s Food gives a 10% discount so a $100 gift card cost the school only $90.

When can I purchase Scrip?  Local merchants and a limited amount of the best-selling national merchants are kept on hand for envelope and school office sales.  Envelope sales are available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Families send in their order and payment made out to “SLS Scrip” via their child, and the order is sent home that afternoon.  School office sales are available for walk-ins Monday thru Friday 9am to 2pm.  Please note that there might be a slight wait during lunch hours (11am to 1pm).  National orders and payments to “SLS Scrip” are due in the school office by 10am Monday (10am Tuesday if Monday is a holiday) and are sent home in the youngest child’s Thursday envelope.  If wanting a large quantity of a national merchant that is kept on hand, please place it as a Monday national order instead of as an envelope order.  Also, please send two checks if placing both an envelope and national order at the time.  There is a possibility of national backorders around the holidays, so placing national orders early is advised.

Which stores participate in the program?  There are a variety of retailers available for purchase through Scrip.  Merchants available for daily sales are listed on the Envelope Order Form.  An abbreviated list of national merchants available through Great Lakes Scrip Center is listed on the National Order Form.  To view a complete list of national merchants who participate, go to www.glscrip.com, click on “Retailer List,” and write the unlisted merchant on the bottom right of the National Order Form.

What denominations are available?  Denominations vary by merchants.

Can I use coupons when making Scrip purchases?  Yes.  Scrip is treated like cash.

Can I use Scrip to pay my store charge cards?  Currently you may do so at Kohl’s and J C Penney.

What are the stores’ change policies when using Scrip?   No change is given back since gift cards have a declining balance.

Can I use Scrip at all store locations?  Yes, unless otherwise stated.

What are the Scrip requirements for participating?  As per the St. Leo School Family Expectation agreement, families may choose to purchase a minimum of $2,000 each Scrip fiscal year (May 15th to the following May 14th) or pay an assessment of $250 in lieu of purchasing Scrip.  If a family does not meet the minimum $2,000 requirement, they are assessed a partial fee based on the amount below the $2,000 minimum.  Both full and partial assessments are due at the end of the Scrip fiscal year (May 14th).  There is no extra charge or limit to the amount of Scrip a family may purchase.  In addition, friends and relatives may participate and credit their purchases to a family’s account.  The minimum $2,000 a family purchases is credited to the school’s account.  Any amount over $2,000 is credited to the family’s account.

How are Family Rewards calculated?  At the end of the Scrip fiscal year, $3,000 is deducted from the total profits to pay the Scrip Coordinator’s stipend.  The remaining profit is then divided by the total Scrip sales of qualifying families to calculate the average profit percentage.  This percentage is then applied to each qualifying family’s account (including the school’s account) to calculate their Family Rewards earned.

For example, if the average profit percentage is 5% the Family Rewards are as follows:

1.  The Barber family purchased a total of $2,000.  $2,000 is credited to the school’s account and nothing is credited to the Barber’s account.  Therefore, no Family Rewards is earned.  However, since the Barbers met the $2,000 minimum, they do not owe any assessment.

2.  The Perry family purchased a total of $4,000.  $2,000 is credited to the school’s account and $2,000 is credited to the Perry’s account.  Therefore, the Perry family earns $100 in Family Rewards ($2,000 x .05).

3.  The Thompson family purchased a total of $8,000.  $2,000 is credited to the school’s account and $6,000 is credited to the Thompson’s account.  Therefore, the Thompson family earns $300 in Family Rewards ($6,000 x .05).

Where is my Family Rewards applied?  A family can allocate their Family Rewards to the following fees or funds.

  1. St. Leo School Resource Fees with any remaining rewards applied to the first month’s tuition.
  2. Bishop McGuiness High School fees only if the youngest child has graduated from St. Leo School.
  3. St. Leo School Tuition Assistance Fund
  4. St. Leo School Enhancement and Emergency Fund

The St. Leo School Principal will be the arbitrator of any disputes concerning these guidelines.
