Second Grade

Our Second Grade Curriculum is as follows:

Religion
In Second Grade, students prepare for the sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Throughout the year, your child will learn many signs of God’s loving care and practical ways to use his or her talents to share God’s love with others.

Reading 
The Superkids Reading Program is a curriculum that is designed specifically for grades K-2 to build literacy skills and to develop confident readers. Students will learn phonetic skills and then apply these skills to decodable and informational text.Superkids integrates reading, spelling, handwriting, grammar, and composition into one program.This program builds a foundation for students to read fluently and with comprehension.

Handwriting
Manuscript handwriting is reviewed before cursive. The cursive handwriting program emphasizes the four keys to legibility: size, shape, slant, and spacing.  Lowercase letters are covered first followed by uppercase letters.

Math
In Second Grade, the math curriculum focuses on four main components. These components are extending understanding of base ten notation, building fluency with addition and subtraction.

Students will learn the concepts of:

  • Computation
  • Place Value
  • Measurement
  • Graphs
  • Geometry
  • Time
  • Money

Social Studies
The focus of the Second Grade social studies curriculum is community.  Students understand the importance of family life and develop as good citizens in the classroom, school, community, and world.

Students will:

  • Develop map skills
  • Learn about communities of the past and present
  • Develop understanding of economics and the world of work
  • Learn about taking care of planet earth
  • Develop understanding of Communication and Transportation
  • Learn about United States Heritage

 

Science
Students discover how living things grow and change and study living organisms, their habitats, and life cycles.  They learn about weather patterns and how weather affects the environment.

Second Graders will learn about:

  • Life Cycles
  • Classification
  • Weather and Seasons
  • Insects

Learning Experiences
Second Graders participate in the liturgy by presenting gifts during the Mass. Also, Second Grade students pray the Rosary with their Fifth Grade Prayer Partners on a weekly basis.
